John A. Orcutt is a distinguished professor of geophysics at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a secretary of the Navy/Chief of Naval Operations Oceanography Chair. He served as a submariner in the U.S. Navy. His research interests include the exploitation of information technology, marine/continental seismology and geophysics. He received the Ewing Medal from the. Navy and AGU & the Marine Technology Society’s Lockheed Martin Award for Ocean Science and Technology. He served as president of the American Geophysical Union and was elected as an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He was elected to the American Philosophical Society and the National Academy of Engineering. Presently, he is the Editor-in-Chief of the AGU open journal “Earth and Space Sciences.
